Job Description:

Wittenberg University is seeking an Assistant Director for the Upward Bound program. This individual will work with the Upward Bound staff in carrying out the essential operations of the program. This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Director of Upward Bound.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  1. Plan, coordinate, and execute a cultural and recreational program during the academic year and six-week summer component.
  2. Carry out the responsibilities of the Director in their absence.
  3. Work with Director to establish program policies.
  4. Write portions of the proposal and annual reports as they relate to student needs assessment.
  5. Coordinate all phases of recruiting students and assess the needs of all program participants upon entrance into the program.
  6. Coordinate alumni affairs, including but not limited to updating and keeping current files on former students.
  7. Represent the program as it pertains to relations with a variety of social agencies on behalf of students and their families.
  8. Supervise the maintenance of all records.
  9. Review all computerized rosters and student profiles.
  10. Administer student testing (including the selection of tests and development of tests), scheduling, administering and grading tests and disseminating information to appropriate personnel.
  11. Execute Home Visitation to prospective students prior to entrance into the program, and make regular home visits to meet with Upward Bound students and their parents.
  12. Consult with Academic and Career Education Coordinator to provide information and insight as it pertains to the College Placement Program.
  13. Work closely with the reading and writing instructors to ensure that students are receiving remediation in the needed areas.
  14. Act as liaison between program and secondary schools, providing information for both program and school personnel as it pertains to Upward Bound students.
  15. Conduct exit interviews on project students who prematurely leave the program.
  16. Design program newsletters and other correspondence.
  17. Coordinate monthly cultural activities and fund-raising efforts.
  18. Supervise tutorial lab one night per week.
  19. Coordinate and advise the Parent Advising Board.
  20. Perform other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, etc.

Requirements:

Requirements include:

  • A bachelor's degree. A master's degree in a closely related field is preferred.
  • 1 - 3 years of experience required.
  • Knowledge of various academic and psychological tests.
  • Knowledge of the federal rules and regulations governing Upward Bound students.
  • Experience working with federally TRIO-funded programs and target populations preferred.
  • Demonstration of sensitivity to the type of student recruited to Upward Bound.
  • Strong writing and reporting skills, verbal communication.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary; strong public speaking skills with comfort in front of a large audience are required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (specifically, Publisher, Word, Excel).
  • Working knowledge of the Zoom virtual meeting platform.
  • A valid driver's license is required; must meet required insurance qualifications found in Wittenberg Motor Pool policies and procedures. If license is from out of state, successful candidate will need to obtain a valid Ohio driver's license within 30 days of hire date.
  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings required.
  • Be able to remain in a stationary position for more than 50% of work day.
  • Ability to navigate spaces external to the university such as local schools, job fairs, etc.
  • Frequently move equipment weighing up to 20 pounds for various event and activity needs.
