Job Description

At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, 80,000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Could you be the full-time hybrid Civil (Structural) Engineer in Pittsburgh, PA, US we’re looking for?

Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your civil and structural engineering expertise in a new cutting-edge field. You’ll work alongside collaborative and innovative teammates.
You'll play a key role in designing and scoping effective interfaces and design criteria for wayside transit equipment and sub-systems, contributing to the development of world-class transit systems. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with teams across the business (multi-disciplinary engineers, project teams, suppliers, consultants, and contractors), prepare bids, proposals, and design specifications, and much more.

We’ll look to you for:

  • Preparing system-level and detailed design reviews and leading sub-system design reviews to ensure all requirements are met,

  • Creating bids, proposals, design drawings, specifications, and criteria for wayside systems and sub-systems such as running surfaces/rails, guidance systems, buffers, platform screen door systems, switching systems, equipment mounting designs, power rails, and heating systems,

  • Preparing scope, drawings, design calculations, and reference materials to establish and maintain baseline designs and interfaces,

  • Establishing strong working relationships and interfacing with clients, technical representatives, internal teams, engineers, project managers, and construction teams,

  • Leading research and development activities for wayside systems and sub-systems,

  • Collaborating with suppliers and fabricators, including supporting First Article Inspections,

  • Traveling up to 10% domestically and/or internationally.

All about you

We value passion and attitude over experience. That’s why we don’t expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we’ve listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:

  • Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or related field. PE license or ability to obtain it is desirable,

  • Experience or understanding of engineering design for transit systems, including wayside equipment and sub-systems,

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Microstation, and 3D modeling tools (e.g., Catia v5 or equivalent),

  • Familiarity with construction installation processes and procedures,

  • Prioritization and time management skills for handling multiple projects and proposals concurrently,

  • Willingness to travel up to 10% domestically and/or internationally,

  • FEA design and analysis experience or a willingness to train in this area.

Things you’ll enjoy

Join us on a life-long transformative journey – the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You’ll also:

  • Work with innovative transit systems and cutting-edge engineering solutions to shape the future of mobility,

  • Progress towards leadership opportunities and mastery in civil and wayside engineering within a dynamic and inclusive environment,

  • Contribute to innovative projects,

  • Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries,

  • Utilise our collaborative and forward-thinking working environment,

  • Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognises your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, 401k).

You don’t need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you’ll be proud. If you’re up for the challenge, we’d love to hear from you!

Important to note

As a global business, we’re an equal-opportunity employer that celebrates diversity across the 63 countries we operate in. We’re committed to creating an inclusive workplace for everyone.
