If your student is thinking about working on campus this fall, here are answers to a few of the most commonly asked questions:
Carthage’s job/internship posting board, Handshake, is the best place to find on- and off-campus positions. Students can get started by completing or updating their profile.
Profiles allow students to describe past work/volunteer experience, clubs/activities, and special projects. Completing a Handshake profile is very similar to completing a resume or LinkedIn profile.
After the Handshake profile is completed, students can click on the “jobs” button; then, click the button marked “all filters,” then “on-campus” to see a list of available campus jobs. Then, they can review job descriptions and apply with their profile or a resume. Supervisors will contact students to arrange interviews. Jobs will populate in Handshake closer to the fall semester.
When students are ready to apply, be sure to apply for more than one position. Some supervisors receive many applications, so it is very important for students to apply for more than one position.
While students might choose to work in more than one position, they cannot work more than 20 hours per week total for all positions.
Additional positions will be posted on a rolling basis. Students should contact their career specialist with additional questions.
Students will need to present the proper verification documents such as birth certificate and driver’s license or passport as part of the I-9 verification process. These documents must be original documents, not copies of the documents and cannot be expired. If your student is living on campus this year, feel free to bring these sensitive documents during check-in and then take the documents back home with you for safekeeping.
You can find additional information about federal work study and student employment on the Work-Study and Campus Employment website.
This summer, encourage your student to take time to reflect on their 2024-25 experiences in their My Aspire Plan (MAP).
MAP, powered by Suitable, allows students to develop key competencies needed for success in the world of work. In the platform, students can track, reflect, and connect their experiences to competencies — building a digital scrapbook in which they can earn points with every experience.
Students will receive nudges via email from their career specialist throughout the summer with suggestions on MAP activities.
